BS 8555

BS 8555 is a British Standard that provides guidance on the phased implementation, maintenance and improvement of a formal Environmental Management System (EMS) to help organisations improve their environmental performance and their supply chain relationships.
It is based on an implementation process that can be undertaken in up to six separate phases and allows for phased acknowledgement of progress towards full EMS implementation.

It also includes advice on the integration and use of environmental performance evaluation techniques during the implementation process and the co-ordination of an EMS with other management systems (e.g. quality or health and safety).

BS EN ISO 14001

ISO 14001 provides a process for controlling and improving a company's environmental performance, which can have a significant impact on its success. It helps identify elements of a business that impact on the environment and helps to achieve compliance to the relevant environmental legislation. This is achieved by producing objectives for improvement and a management program to achieve them, with regular reviews for continual improvement. ISO 14001 is the internationally recognised standard for EMS development.

This standard is applicable to any organisation that wishes to:

  • Implement, maintain and improve an environmental management system.
  • Assure itself of its conformance with its own stated environmental policy (those policy commitments of course must be made).
  • Demonstrate conformance.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations.
  • Seek certification of its environmental management system by an external third party organisation.
  • Make a self-determination of conformance.
